Choosing A Contractor

Advance Design and Construction is committed to providing a positive experience for our clients. One important way we accomplish this by only utilizing properly licensed sub-contractors. The Nevada State Contractors Board has established a process by which a contractor must perform business. This process was created to protect YOU, the customer. Some of our local competitors like to misrepresent themselves and short cut the legal process. Please add this list of key questions to your list when interviewing a contractor for hire:

  • Is the contractor licensed in the state of Nevada? This information can be confirmed by calling the Nevada State Contractors Board at (775) 688-1141 or at: www.nscb.state.nv.us
  • Who is the Principal name(s) on the contractor's License? What qualifies him to perform the work? How long has he been building or remodeling houses in Tahoe as a General Contractor?
  • How frequently does the principal visit job sites to insure work is progressing correctly and promptly?
  • What is the contractor's Monetary Bid Limit? This is the maximum dollar amount a contractor can legally bid on a job. This requirement is in place to insure a Contractor does not take on a project that is outside his monetary capability. The Nevada State Contractors Board uses a company's assets and cash flow to establish this limit. It is an indicator of their monetary strength. It is required by law to be noted on all estimates provided.
  • Does the contractor ever use un-licensed subcontractors? As required by law, does the contractor insure that all employee's are covered with Workmen's Compensation Insurance? Does the contractor insure that all sub-contractors employee's are covered with Workmen's Compensation Insurance?
  • Remember, you the homeowner could be held liable if a worker is hurt and a contractor and/or a sub-contractor does not have Workmens Compensation Insurance in place.
  • Does the Contractor have General Liablity Insurance in place to cover all of his operations? Has he ever had to use it? If so, why?
  • Does the contractor require all sub-contractors to maintain a General Liability Policy equal to his?
  • Has the contractor ever been asked to leave a project prior to completion? If so, why? Remember, there are two sides to every story.
  • Check the contractor's credit history. Run a Dunn and Bradstreet report to acquire their credit history: www.dnb.com
